St Joseph's School - Clermont, Qld
Our school, St Joseph’s, situated in the small town of Clermont in Central Queensland, was on board from the beginning to host our own St Joseph’s “Talk Like a Pirate Day.” One of our families needed assistance from Childhood Cancer Support and this was our opportunity to raise awareness and help give back to an important cause.
Right from the beginning we felt proud to be able to showcase what Childhood Cancer Support offers families going through an extremely tough time. We wanted the community to know exactly what Childhood Cancer Support does and encourage people to fundraise. The $11,000 we were able to raise will directly help Childhood Cancer Support care for families while their child receives life-saving medical treatment.
We were so proud that our small town has such big hearts!
Why Should Early Education/Care and Schools Get Involved?
Community Support
Fundraising creates awareness in children that they are part of a larger community.
When they raise funds for Childhood Cancer Support, it teaches them to be grateful for what they have and that they can help other children who are less fortunate. It has been shown that children who participate in service causes at a young age continue to do so as they get older - it is a gift that will benefit their community for years to come! Fundraising events can also help build a connected community and can lead to a lot of fun, laughter and memories.
Self Development
What we don’t always think about, are the other benefits that fundraising activities offer to our students.
Students raise funds to help a common goal, and if done correctly, they can learn fundamental life skills such as teamwork, creativity, customer service and goal setting. All of these and more can be incorporated into your fundraiser.
Childhood Empowerment
Fundraising gives children a sense of empowerment. Children do not often have the monetary resources available to them to bring about change, but through fundraising, they can acquire the monetary means necessary to begin the process of change. They see first-hand that they can make a positive change in their communities. They learn responsibility and empowerment while making a positive impact in their community.
Resources & Lesson Plans
Curriculum aligned lesson plans are available from foundation to year 9, along with loads of activities for early education. The lesson plans are exclusive to schools and centres participating and fundraising in Childhood Cancer Support's Talk Like a Pirate Day event.
